What is the Canadian Lifeboat Institution? The Canadian Lifeboat Institution has been in operation for over 18 years. During that time members have participated in over 3,000 rescues, working in close cooperation with other search and rescue organizations. The Canadian Lifeboat Institution is a volunteer, on-profit, nationally registered charitable marine Search and Rescue organization: Dedicated to saving lives and property at sea. Volunteers from the community, from all walks of life, concerned about marine safety. Non-government funded - the CLI relies on personal donation, corporate sponsorship and community grants, rather than relying on government budgeted funding.
The Canadian Lifeboat Institution does not attempt to replace the Canadian Coast Guard or its Auxiliary. We provide vessels and trained crews to assist local, provincial and national agencies to save those in peril on the waters of Canada. WE’RE FOLLOWING A VERY SUCCESSFUL MODEL... The Royal National Lifeboat Institution The Royal National Lifeboat Institution was founded in 1824 by Sir William Hillary. When called upon, it provides day or night lifeboat service required for search and rescue. The R.N.L.I. service area extends up to 50 miles from the coasts of Ireland and the United Kingdom. The Canadian Lifeboat Institution is a member of the International Lifeboat Federation. The International Lifeboat Federation is a permanent consulting body to the International Maritime Organization. The I.M.O. is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for improving maritime safety and preventing pollution from ships. The objective of the Canadian Lifeboat Institution is to promote water safety and to preserve life and property on the territorial seas and inland waters of Canada. This is done by: *Complementing the efforts of local, provincial and national organizations with the common goal of marine safety. *Providing equipment and personnel for marine search and rescue services. *Promoting safe boating practices through accident prevention awareness and safety education programs. |
