After a successful training and fishery patrol deployment, the Delta Lifeboat was hauled out of the water from 19 March – 13 Apr 2019 for refit. Over a period of approximately 4 weeks at Shelter Island Marina a lot of work was conducted in replacing some of the wood to protect from future ice damage as well as sanding, painting, caulking, and general upkeep. Most of the work is done by our volunteer crews so that the professionals can quickly do the required tasks keeping our costs as low as possible. The vessel was launched on 13 Apr and sailed back o Ladner for a clean-up to prepare for future operations.
Delta L/B conducts Fraser Power Squadron orientation trip
Fresh out of refit, on Sunday 14 Apr 2019 the DELTA L/B conducted an orientation trip with 10 people from Fraser Power Squadron. During the 4-hour trip, they got a chance to practice steering compass courses, taking compass bearings, and using those bearing to establish their position on the chart. Participants also did an anchoring, a docking in Steveston, and look-out and reporting from the bridge. This showed how the CLI does those things, with John H explained the reasons why.
Delta & Fraser Lifeboat Herring Roe Fishery Support
From 23 Feb to 17 Mar 2019 the Delta Lifeboat and Fraser Lifeboat conducted a pre-roe herring fishery training exercise followed by a Fishery Patrol. Crews trained with both lifeboats as well as various fish boats whilst waiting for the herring to come. Our vessels deployed to Comox, on Vancouver Island and then worked the surrounding fishing grounds. Delta L/B was on station for 3 weeks and Fraser L/B deployed for 1 week. Delta L/B was also called to medevac a patient from the fishing grounds to Comox.
Vancouver Boat Show Feb 2019
The CLI attended the Vancouver International Boat Show from 06-10 Feb 2019. The show was well attended and our crews were busy at both the indoor booth and outside with the Delta Lifeboat at the floating boat show part. This is a great opportunity for us to showcase our organisation, conduct some fundraising, and provide boating safety information to the public. This event is also used to help with our fundraising, this year generating approx $6500. We thank everyone who attended, and especially those who donated to support our Lifeboat operations. A larger selection of photos is available on our Facebook site.
Remembrance Day 2018
On 11 November 2018 members of the Canadian Lifeboat Institution took part in a variety of Remembrance services around the lower mainland of BC. One of our members was in the Havards providing air support all over the region; another was a bugler, while others attended parades. Many of our members have served, or also have family members who have served in a variety of conflicts around the globe. We are proud to say, “We Remember Them”. In Ladner, a small contingent led by John Horton marched in the parade and laid a wreath.
